Medicare rebates are available for psychological consultations based on the Australian Government’s Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiate. The scheme aims to provide better access to psychologists in order to provide more affordable mental health care.
In order to receive Medicare rebates, individuals need to obtain a referral from a General Practitioner (GP) or Psychiatrist. The GP additionally completes a mental health treatment plan. Referrals need to be completed before the first session. A maximum of ten sessions per calendar year can be rebated. You do not need a referral if you do not wish to claim a Medicare rebate.
